Online Screening Tests for Adults

Dyslexia Screening Tests. Choose one; Screeners indicate the likelihood of dyslexia, not diagnose. For a more in-depth understanding, I highly suggest an evaluation or screening by a professional. Please visit my Evaluations page for assessments I offer.
  • Dyslexia Screener App from NeuroLearning (ages 7 and up)  - Note: I offer the NeuroLearning Screening with an hour consultation over Zoom or in person
  • Dyslexia Screener for Adults (The International Association for Dyslexia)
  • Map Your Dyslexia by Headstrong Nation

Career Tests. Choose one.
  • Holland Code Career Test
  • Clifton Strengths

Executive Functioning Tests with Books. Choose one. When taking a survey, do not think too hard on any one question. These scales are designed to measure your first response. The results should reveal your strengths and weakness based on your top and bottom scores.
  • Executive Function Questionnaire by Dawson & Guare, accompanies The Smart but Scattered Guide to Success (available in audio)
  • EF Quiz w/ accompanying workbook

 Skills Development for Adults

It is never too late to improve a skill.
Workbook: Dyslexia Workbook for Adults: Practical Tools to Improve Executive Functioning, Boost Literacy Skills, and Develop Your Unique Strengths by Reid
Writing: The Institute for Excellence in Writing – Writing with Structure and Style
Grammar: The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation, eleventh edition by Jane Straus
Spelling: Spelling Rules Workbook by Joanne Rudling
Reading: Choose only one program at a time to remediate skills. Reading and spelling will be taught simultaneously with an Orton Gillingham program. There are online and tutor options. Most programs bring you to the 9th grade level of reading. Still, OG programs will offer explicit instruction to benefit a broader understanding of language beyond a grade level. Expect your program to take approximately 200 hours. You must commit a minimum of two hours a week over a minimum of two sessions.
  • Reading programs founded on Orton Gillingham with a tutor include Wilson Reading, Barton Reading and Spelling, Slingerland, or personal instruction with a certified Orton Gillingham instructor. Options available virtually or in person.
  • Algorithm programs online include Reading Horizons At-Home, MindPlay, and Language Tune-up Kit (jwor.com). These do not have a live coach; they can be worked on at your convenience. Take advantage of free trials to find a good fit.
  • Parents, you can learn by teaching your kids with Barton Reading and Spelling or Pride Reading Program. I highly recommend taking the Barton Tutor Screening to hear the sounds correctly before working with either program. (bartonreadng.com)
Structured Word Inquiry:  For an introduction to SWI, search for Peter Bowers (WordWorksKingston). I like a YouTube by Gina Cooke, “Why is there a “b” in doubt?” For delving deeper visit:

  • Word searcher and mini-matrix builder – nielramsden.co.uk

American Disabilities Act (ADA)

According to the American Disabilities Act of 1990, the severity of the symptoms and how they limit your work or school performance determines accommodations. You must initiate the conversation by telling your representative about your condition, the reasonable accommodations you are asking for, and why you believe they will help.

Technology

Technology allows the individual with dyslexia to lean into their cognitive strengths by leveling the playing field between dyslexics and their typical reading peers.

  • Grammarly Premium (Microsoft Office, Windows, Apple, Chrome, Google, Phone)

Also, be sure to check for embedded accessibility functions, under the Accessories tab, on your current devices and platforms. Check for reading ease (i.e., text to voice, highlighting, font, word size) and writing support (i.e., voice to text, read back function, grammar/editing functions)
