The National Institutes of Health (NIH) states that 95 percent of poor readers can be brought up to grade-level if they receive effective help early. The window of opportunity is Kindergarten through 1st grade.

Pre-Reading Screening Procedures to Identify 1st Grade Academic Needs (Revised) by Beth Slingerland
Children who test below average in phonemic awareness, rapid, naming, and auditory memory skills are highly at risk for a reading disability. Early screening is recommended if there is a family history of reading difficulties, late reading, or poor adult spellers.
-The Slingerland Pre-Reading Screening is designed for typical developing children in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, or beginning 1st grade who have not been exposed to reading or who are not learning to read with traditional methods. The purpose for this screening is to help identify the academic needs for children entering 1st grade and determine if there is indications of a Specific Language Disability. The Slingerland Pre-Reading Screening can give early indications to a later reading struggle.

If you suspect your child may have difficulty learning to read, this screening is for you. Research tells us that a child at risk for reading struggles can be taught to read by using the right method and approach. There is evidence that early intervention improves a child's ability to read fluently as well as accurately. Test results give you, the parent, information vital to teaching your child to read or advocating for your child in school. The Slingerland Pre-Reading Screening can be completed in 1 - 2 sessions, includes a written report and recommendations, with a follow-up consultation.
